Materialism

As the word itself signifies, Materialism is a philosophical system which regards matter as the only reality in the world, and which undertakes to explain every event in the universe as resulting from the conditions and activity of matter, and which thus denies the existence of God and the soul.

Wealth seeking, extravagence, superficiality, believing the bigger the pay check the more important the person, competitiveness, selfishness, preoccupation with money, believing one deserves to have whatever they want (sense of entitlement), seeking status and power relative to peers, believing there is nothing wrong with marrying partly for money, disdaining financial insecurity, avoiding losing status and control, looking attractive is more important than comfort, believing in success through appearances, second place is not good enough, manipulative, needing applause, not generous, loving to win awards, doing things primarily for our own benefit, getting angry when we don't get when we want, getting our way, prefering instant gratification -- these are all characteristics of materialism.

Matthew 6:19-20  "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
